How Security Force Assistance Works: A Conversation with Maj. Gen. Scott Jackson

March 22, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm

What is security force assistance? How does it work? How does the United States use security force assistance as part of its larger political, military, and diplomatic toolkit? What are the opportunities and limitations of security force assistance programs? How can security force assistance be used to support allies and partners in a variety of circumstances, such as in responding to the war in Ukraine?
On Tuesday, March 22, join TISS for a panel discussion with General Scott Jackson, the Commanding General of Security Force Assistance Command (SFAC), a division-level headquarters at Fort Bragg that oversees all US Army Security Force Assistance Brigades (SFABs). SFABs are specialized Army units with the core mission “to conduct training, advising, assisting, enabling and accompanying operations with allied and partner nations.” Over the past few years, SFABs have evolved from their original role building the Afghan National Army and are currently deployed in over 30 countries.
Gen. Jackson will be joined in conversation by Moses Khisa (Assistant Professor of Political Science, North Carolina State University), Eric Mvukiyehe (Assistant Professor of Political Science, Duke University), and Patricia Sullivan (Associate Professor of Public Policy, University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill) for a conversation bridging the gap between research and practice, moderated by Kyle Beardsley.

In-person attendees are required to wear a mask and vaccination is strongly recommended in accordance with Duke’s policies. For those unable to attend in person, register for the livestream here.
