UPCOMING:

African Security & Cooperation Conference, October 25th 2024 at UNC’s Fedex Global Education Center

This conference aims to bring together experts on African politics. Participants will consider new research focused on the downstream consequences of security cooperation. The conference intends to hear from both research faculty and practitioners on new research examining the legacy of US security assistance in the region for both the African partners and US foreign policy. A few research areas that will be presented and discussed at the conference relating to security assistance in Africa, past and present are:

o What is the legacy of Chinese and Russian efforts to compete for influence in the region?

o What is the legacy of trade and investments in resources, including oil and the rising demand for critical minerals necessary for a transition to a green economy?

o What is the legacy of colonial and post-colonial hierarchies in which great powers have left imprints on the security sectors and political institutions?

o What is the legacy of Cold War era proxy wars that were manifested in armed conflict and political oppression of opposition movements?

o What is the legacy of the global war on terror and attempts to eradicate IS and Al-Qaeda?

This conference is an opportunity for scholars to present their research and receive constructive feedback. We are also planning an opportunity to interface with practitioners during a research dialogue session in which the authors distill their key findings and receive input from practitioners about how future work might best inform policy making.

RSVP to monica.harvey@duke.edu if you wish to attend and/or present.
