TISS was founded by a military historian, and started as a partnership among military historians and political scientists. While we have expanded well beyond these humble roots, we have never lost sight of the vital role that historical perspective plays in the analysis of contemporary security issues. The Duke and UNC graduate program in military history continues to thrive. The undergraduate degree program at UNC-Chapel Hill in Peace, War, and Defense is one of the most successful programs of its type in the nation while Duke University offers a concentration in War, Military, and Society. A major new emphasis in recent years has been on Gender and War. The Carolina Gender, War, and Culture Series hosts regular seminars and workshops and in April 2017 a new project GWOnline was launched – GWonline.
