The Last Muslim Conquest: The Ottoman Empire and its Wars in Europe
Gábor Ágoston (Georgetown University)

Monday, March 21, 5:30 to 7pm
Pink Parlor, East Duke Building, East Campus*

Drawing on his 2021 book entitled The Last Muslim Conquest: The Ottoman Empire and Its Wars in Europe, Gábor Ágoston will talk about Ottoman warfare and lawfare in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. His lecture will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the Ottoman military, diplomacy, and information gathering vis-à-vis the Ottomans’ main regional rivals, offering new data and perspectives on the gradual shifts in power between the Ottomans and their adversaries and reframing the old debate about the Ottoman decline.

Gábor Ágoston studied European, Ottoman, and Hungarian history and Turkish at the University of Budapest. He has taught on the history of the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire, and Ottoman-Habsburg relations at the University of Budapest and at Georgetown University. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Vienna, Georgetown’s McGhee Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (Alanya, Turkey), and Georgetown University Qatar. His publications in English, Turkish and Hungarian examine Ottoman warfare, military technology, and armaments industries, as well as Ottoman, Habsburg, and Hungarian frontier management, diplomacy, and information-gathering, contributing to the New Military and Diplomatic Histories.
